Friday morning
IT WAS worse than that. So much worse than he could possibly have imagined. Max had hoped heâd wake up to find Robert had left during the night. God was never going to cut him that break, though, was he?
Max was warm and comfortable, his head pillowed on something firm but soft and smooth under his cheek. He was resting on Robertâs chest, snuggled up against his side, his arm and leg flung over him. Worse than that, if there could be worse, Maxâs morning wood was pressing into Robertâs side.
He was still half asleep, caught between embarrassment and the pleasure of waking up for the first time in someoneâs arms. Max knew he needed to move before Robert awoke, that then the situation could be recovered, but it was just so damn nice. He could feel Robertâs warm skin under his cheek, rising and falling quietly as he slept. Max had never had this. Heâd wanted it but had never found anyone heâd wanted it with apart from one other man. But that was a long time ago now. He pressed his face down gently, burying his nose into Robertâs skin. Robert even smelled like home: grasses and meadow flowers beneath man and sweat. Couldnât he just have this for a few minutes more? He closed his eyes again, not even the gritty feel of his contact lenses preventing him from going back to sleep.
The next time Max opened his eyes he was overwhelmed by the gentleness of the green-gold eyes watching him as he slept. There was a hand resting on his side as a solid thigh slid between his legs. He blinked sleepily as he struggled to focus his eyes.
âHey.â Robert smiled at him as he realized Max was awake. The hand on his side stroked him gently and slipped under the hem of his T-shirt to find the sleep-warmed skin below.
âWhy did you stay here?â It wasnât what he intended to say. But Max was confused, and he needed to know.
âYou know why.â
Max felt a bolt of resentment. âYou felt sorry for me, so you thought youâd have a sleepover?â Was that worse than a pity fuck?
In answer, Robertâs large hand slid down his back and pulled him in closer. Max found himself enclosed in a hug, and his head rested back on Robertâs chest. It was comforting to hear the slow thud thud of Robertâs heart under his ear.
âYouâre nearly my longest relationship.â
âWish I could be more,â Robert whispered against his hair. âGuess Iâll have to settle for friends.â The words rumbled through Robertâs chest.
A friend. Max felt a smile curve his lips. The resentment drained away in the face of such honesty. He wanted to be angry, but he couldnât be, not when Robert had given him this.
âYouâre one of a kind, Robert Armitage. How have you survived with the temptations of Hollywood?â
There was a snort and what sounded like a rueful laugh from above him. âWe film in Vancouver. The only temptation is how many pairs of long underwear to wear to filming.
